The Obstacle is the Way

September 14, 2022

One of my friends recently shared, The Obstacle is the Way by Ryan Holiday with me. It was a powerful read. The book is full of principle-oriented reminders and anecdotes. They serve to teach us to embrace the lessons, opportunities for growth and change, acceptance, and many other maxims hidden in every obstacle we experience.

What stands in the way becomes the way is a notion that obstacles that seem to just be roadblocks, can in fact be utilized and even necessary, for us to achieve our goals. Overcoming obstacles also strengthens our character to become wiser, more innovative, and more prudent.

The Obstacle is the Way educates us on detoxing and reframing our minds and attitudes to view obstacles objectively. It also teaches about putting the principles learned into action passionately and with full intention. Finally, we must also learn to accept fate and own the lessons that were taught. We must hold them as a true belief system for everyday use. We are reminded to be present as tomorrow is not promised. We should aim to accomplish as many wholesome deeds and goals as possible in the present.

Ultimately, there is a formula for success that has been applied by many icons of history such as John D. Rockefeller, Amelia Earhart, Ulysses S. Grant, Steve Jobs, and many more. The formula allowed them to turn obstacles into lucrative opportunities. They were faced with seemingly impossible situations but they managed to find miraculous victories.

The impediment to action advances action. What stands in the way becomes the way.

Marcus Aurelius

Life is truly beautiful with the highs and lows. As long as we are still standing, we can push through to better ourselves and hopefully experience redemptive blessings. That which doesn’t kill me makes me stronger, indeed. Adversity can become an advantage.

Have you read, The Obstacle is the Way? If not, would you consider it?
