March is Women’s History Month. There are countless notable inventions, movements, and fun facts associated with women from around the world. Everyday women are also pioneers in their own way as they navigate through life. They are intentional about getting an education, instilling change, progress, and love in their homes, communities, and in the workplace. Here are a few historical fun facts about women to commemorate Women’s History Month.
1. Women of all races were legally eligible to vote in 1965.
2. Shirley Chisholm was the first black woman to be elected to the United States Congress in 1968.
3. The Equal Credit Opportunity Act of 1974, fought by Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, allowed women to secure credit cards in their own names.
4. Sally Ride was the first woman in space on June 18, 1983. She flew on the space shuttle Challenger.
5. Dr. Mae Jemison was the first black woman to travel to space.
6. Aretha Franklin was the first woman inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
7. Women make up 27 percent of Congress. One-hundred and forty-six women currently serve in the United States Congress out of 535 total members.
8. Kamala Harris is the first woman and first woman of color to become Vice President.
9. Amanda Gorman became the youngest inaugural poet in 2021 when she read her poem “The Hill We Climb” at President Joe Biden’s inauguration.
10. Madam C.J. Walker is America’s first female self-made millionaire for her hair care products for black women.
