Inspiration from The Four Agreements

November 1, 2020

The Four Agreements was written to serve as a practical guide for personal freedom. Author Don Miguel Ruiz shares the reasons why we are deprived of joy and unnecessary struggles and offers solutions to live by. Based on ancient Toltec wisdom, The Four Agreements is a transformative code of conduct that can bring us freedom, love, and joy. The agreements are ones we make with other people, with God, with life, and most importantly, with ourselves. I encourage you to read and apply The Four Agreements if you seek to have a better grip on life.

The Four Agreements

  1. Be Impeccable With Your Word.

This agreement focuses on the importance of speaking with integrity and carefully choosing words before speaking. “Impeccable” is Latin for “without sin.” Ruiz considers it a sin to be anything that goes against oneself. Being impeccable with our words means to take responsibility for our actions and remain without judgment against ourselves and others.

2. Don’t Take Anything Personally.

This agreement teaches the importance of having a strong sense of self and not needing to rely on the opinions of others in order to have peace. The actions, beliefs, and perceptions of a person is a projection of their own reality. Ruiz believes that anger, envy, and depression can lessen or even dissipate once a person stops taking things personally.

3. Don’t Make Assumptions.

This agreement teaches that when one makes assumptions, it can create stress and interpersonal conflict because the person believes their assumption is a representation of the truth. Asking questions and confirming that the communication is clear between the persons involved helps one master this agreement. It also mitigates misunderstandings, emotional outbursts, and drama.

4. Always Do Your Best.

This agreement encompasses the previous three plus living to one’s full potential. It entails doing the best that one can manage in every area of life. Ruiz believes that people will be able to live a life free from sorrow and self-ridicule when all of the agreements are practiced regularly.

Have you read The Four Agreements? If so, which agreement do you meditate on the most? Why?
